The ending the chapters of the great Gatsby had three distinct themes
Commitment: Reading through these last ending chapters has
Made me concisely aware of the theme I have been seeing
Since the beginning of the story. Apparently neither Tom, Daisy,
or Wilson’s wife wants to stay with their spouse
and instead of getting a divorce they believe
an affair is the easier option and no one will notice.
Situations of these characters I notice that it replicates
Life. All of the major players feel that marriage vows
Don’t matter and that if they aren't happy they can
Take themselves elsewhere especially if their
Significant other is cheating on them.
Consequences: The theme that also struck out at me was
The consequences of the actions and choices made. The
Climax when Wilson’s wife gets killed by Gastby’s car reveals
Everything into the open forcing them to acknowledge what they have
Been doing. They wanted their affairs to stay hidden, but that was
A false assumption because everything comes out eventually. This
Is true about life when we decide to do something against
Our culture values there will be consequences for our actions.
Death: Everything has a price and sometimes it is a fatal one.
The death of Wilson wife causes a butterfly effect causing both
Wilson and Gatsby to die for being near the scene of the crime.
The death makes Tom, Nick, and daisy’s life miserable. This theme
Of death can be felt through the entire story. From the foreshadowing
In early pages of the story on pg 57 it reveals a car crashing
setting up the death scene later in the story. I felt the
ending was a really devious way of tidying everything together
The "death car" had a very symbolic meaning. I believe it
represented the Essene of death and it will come
when we least expect.
The story that
is replayed between the narrator and reader
is that life is full of distractions which can stop
of commitments, but we must resist for the
greater good.
